Blackpaw could hear the stirring of the others as they got up from their nests, his ears flicking but his eyes still closed with sleep. It was morning, as that was the only time most creature's in this land mass of cold snow, was up. He curled himself into a tighter ball, only to have another apprentice bump into him on their way out, a hiss exploded from him, but nothing else as he quietly calmed himself down. There was nothing to be upset by, apart that he wanted to sleep longer but it was time to get up. He gazed around, letting out a long yawn, jaw gaping wide, sharp pointed teeth - easy to be seen. Most were already up, clan activity already going. He quite liked the warrior code, when you were strong looking, you'd become an apprentice. When you killed a warrior, you became a warrior. It was an easy way, somewhat, to become a warrior.
Stretching, he got up, out of the small makeshift den, into the clearing. Nodding to some of the cat's, as he headed towards Breezestar.

Breezestar noticed her apprentice approaching. "Blackpaw?" she mewed, her voice sharp. "Do you need something?"
She sighed. She'd been forced into this whole mentoring business, and so far she hadn't been very good at it. The VortexClan leader was neither exceptionally kind nor exceptionally gentle. However, the number of healthy warriors available to mentor apprentices was running low. She'd felt obliged to do her part for the Clan.
At least she hadn't been stuck with some sissy cat not fit to fight for VortexClan. Still, it was difficult.

He bobbed his head, a bored look in his eye, "Breezestar, may we train today?" His voice just as bored as his eyes looked. "Or may I go on a hunting or border patrol?" He mewed politely, watching his mentor as well as the clan's leader. His mentor was not the best nor was the mentoring type, however, whether or not she was, he didn't mind her as not only was she leader, but she wasn't weak nor to kind, to gentle when they did train.

She hesitated, then nodded. "We should probably train." Being leader, Breezestar knew more than any cat the importance of training apprentices fully before their first battle, which could happen at any moment. She flicked her tail in the direction of the camp entrance. "Let's go."
Without waiting for a reply, she padded away. She knew without looking that her apprentice was only a tail-length behind her. Closing her eyes, she wondered what the tom needed to work on. He was an excellent fighter, but a little more practice wouldn't hurt him. "Why don't we go to the training hollow?" she asked, turning her paws in the direction of the snowy dip where apprentices worked on their fighting skills.

Blackpaw padded after Breezestar, his pads lightly hitting the snow, both of their feet making soft crunching sounds against the pushed down ice. "Sure, Breezestar." He mewed, sniffing at the ground as if there were prey or something interesting to be smelled, though through the long run, there was not. Slowly he lifted his head, his eyes drifting over the spacious expanse of land before turning to look back at Breezestar.

Breezestar came to a stop at the edge of the training hollow. A flood of memories crashed over her, and for a moment she was floundering beneath them, wild-eyed and desperate. Fighting against her mentor. Her father. Learning new battle moves, day after day, in that same snowy dip. She'd come here many times since she became leader, but it had never affected her like this before. She took a deep, steadying breath and padded to the center. "Show me what you've got," she mewed challengingly to Blackpaw.

He ignored his leader as some memory seemed to ebb through her than leave but returned his attention when she went towards the center, her voice reaching out to him. Blackpaw moved towards the center as well, not to start practicing but to be on more equal footing as Breezestar.
Blackpaw ran in circles around Breezestar at top speed hoping to make her dizzy and if she ran after him, to make her tired. Hoping either one would work, he hopefully tacked her, hoping to knock her down because she was either to dizzy or tired. Perhaps the attack would work, perhaps not.

Breezestar leapt out of the way just in time. She was intelligent enough to know that he was trying to distract her and create an opening, but that didn't stop his trick from affecting her. All the same, she gathered her senses quickly enough to dodge the attack. She took a few steps back, putting space between them, and narrowed her gaze warily. Her eyes flicked from his intent expression to his tensed muscles, and she found herself feeling proud of her skilled apprentice. Then she jumped at him, purposely missing. When she was still airborne, she twisted and swiped her paw at his side.

Blackpaw let out a let out a little hiss of not being able to hit his mentor, even if this was just a practice battle and he wouldn't actually hurt her as there was no point in that. He was tense, cautious, not treating his mentor necessarily as an enemy but not as an ally either - not right now at least. His eyes flickered as she sprung at him, not necessarily going the right way, he moved a little but not enough to get out of her way.
He staggered, looking at his mentor accusingly before falling to the ground, limbs sprawled out his eyes seeming to look like he was dead. "I can see a light!" He exclaimed, shuddering before his body went limp. His eyes rolled into his head as he pretended he was dead.

Breezestar stared at her apprentice in shock as he fell to the snow. She watched, uncomprehending, as his eyes rolled back into his head. Sudden horror shot through her when she realized what had happened. She'd killed him. Killed him. Her apprentice. Her eyes widened as she took in the sight of the limp body lying in the snow. Oh, she'd killed many cats, but to kill a cat of her own Clan? Her own apprentice?
Then her eyes narrowed. Wait. She hadn't hit him hard enough to kill him, had she? She leaned closer to get a better look at him...

Blackpaw's body twitched, he couldn't keep this position of being dead any longer. To still for him and rolling his eyes into his head didn't feel right. He rolled away from his mentor and bounced up, his fur sticking up in different directions with a tad bit of dirt and snow. His eyes twinkling as he looked at his mentor though he did not say anything to make Breezestar anymore mad than she might be for her apprentice pretending he was dead.

Breezestar stared, her mouth hanging slightly open. Then she shook herself back to her senses. "Blackpaw!" she snapped, irritated. She paused and closed her eyes. A few moments later, her anger had subsided. "That might work in a real battle, you know. I've never thought about it, but since we are forbidden by our warrior code to defile another cat's dead body, your opponent will turn their back on you the moment you seem to be dead." Warm approval radiated from her eyes--her former annoyance seemed to have vanished completely.

He purred loudly, what had turned into something that had not really been serious for him had turned into an idea for Breezestar. One that they would use in battle when the next one came, VortexClan would be strong. Stronger and more smarter than VoidClan and SkyClan. His eyes looked towards hers, warm approval radiated from it and joy came from his own. "Will we tell the Clan today?" He asked, almost bouncing up and down with excitement with the new technique.
